Guestbook | Print Obituary

On Sunday, September 2, 2018, LaVorise Lee McKnight answered Heaven's roll call and passed peacefully into God's care. LaVorise was born April 11, 1924, in Girard, Kent Co., Texas, to Edwin Stirman Lee and Lillie Cooner Lee. In 1925 the family moved to Spur, Dickens Co., Texas, where Mr. Lee was a banker. After graduating from Spur High School she received a degree in Home Economics from Abilene Christian College (now University) in 1945. Later that year she married her college sweetheart, Millard Freeman (Mid) McKnight and they began farming on the McKnight homestead in Hale County. In farming and when Mid was later called to the ministry, LaVorise devoted herself to tirelessly supporting his career and to raising their four children and many foster children.
LaVorise was always most content in her role as homemaker and hostess and will always be remembered for her hospitality. She loved family and friends without reserve and countless numbers of God's children were blessed over the years by her generous spirit of Christian service as she opened her home and her heart to them.

Mrs. McKnight was preceded in death and met on the other side by Mid, her husband of 64 years, her parents and grandparents, and one grandson, Travis Lee Weiland.
Left with heavy hearts but wonderful memories of a life well-lived are her four children: Kay (and Michael) Weiland of Georgetown TX, Sue (and Larry) Bridgeman of Lubbock TX, Mef (and Molly) McKnight of Dallas TX, and Dan McKnight of Abilene TX. She is also survived by one sister, Annette (Bill) Fox of Durham NC and eight grandchildren: Amy Jaquez, Emily (Greg) Scherrer, Amanda (Mickey) Murray, Shane Perry, Collin (Alicia) Weiland, Clay (Dana) Weiland, Austin (Josie) Weiland, a granddaughter-in-law Meghan Reynolds, thirteen great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.

If you would like to honor LaVorise's memory with a gift, she would be pleased if you would consider Hillcrest Church of Christ (650 E. Ambler Ave., Abilene, TX 79601) or 100X Development Foundation (7020 Fain Park Dr., Montgomery AL 36117) where any donations in her memory will be used to support Mtendere Village Orphanage and School in Malawi.

Graveside services will be held at 10:00 Wednesday, Sept. 5, at Hale Center TX Cemetery under the direction of Combest Family Funeral Homes in Lubbock. There will also be a memorial service at Hillcrest Church of Christ (650 E. Ambler Ave, Abilene TX) on Thursday, Sept. 6, at 3:00 p.m. with Cleddy Varner and Jack Hardcastle officiating.
