Cathryn Anne Hansen Buesseler, born March 11, 1928, died on Thursday, June 26, 2014. She was the daughter of Alton R. and Anita G. (Magdanz) Hansen of Waupaca, Wisconsin. Her first career was as a women’s ready-to-wear buyer in Madison, Wisconsin, where she met and married John Aure Buesseler, M.D., on December 26, 1959.
They then moved to Columbia, Missouri, where John was the Founding Chief of Ophthalmology at the University of Missouri Medical Center. She enrolled in the University Of Missouri School Of Journalism and received her Bachelor in Journalism in 1965 and her Master of Arts in Journalism in 1969.
In 1970 Cathryn and John moved to Lubbock, Texas, where he assumed the roles of Founding Dean of the School of Medicine and the Founding Vice President for Health Sciences of Texas Tech Health Sciences University. At Texas Tech University Cathryn taught Magazine Writing, Magazine Layout and Design and Production in the Department of Mass Communications, now College of Media and Communications.
At Cathryn’s request there will be no burial service and her cremains will be buried with her husband in Lakeside Cemetery in Waupaca. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to the Cathryn A. H. Buesseler Endowment for a Distinguished Lectureship in Print Media, College of Media and Communications, Texas Tech University, Lubbock, Texas 79409 or Cathryn A. H. Buesseler Endowed Scholarship in the School of Journalism, University of Missouri-Columbia School of Journalism, Columbia, Missouri 65211.
