Coy Hunt

December 10, 1945 — February 23, 2025

Shallowater

Coy Hunt was born on December 10, 1945 in Tucumcari, NM to William F. (Spider) and Beatrice Hunt and died February 23, 2025 after a hard battle with pancreatic cancer.

Coy attended all 12 years of school in Melrose while living on the family farm northwest of there. His mother drove a school bus, so he spent a lot of time riding the bus. He graduated from Melrose High School in 1963 and attended Eastern New Mexico University in Portales, NM where he received a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and Bible in 1967 and a Master’s degree in Mathematics in 1969. While in school at Eastern, he was an active member of the Bible Chair where he made many life-long friends. During his undergraduate years at Eastern, he married Gail Robberson on August 15, 1966.

In 1969, they moved to Alamogordo, New Mexico. He began his Civil Service career at White Sands Missile Range in 1973 and worked six years there before transferring to the Guidance Test Division at Holloman Air Force Base from which he retired in 2009. While there, he was an analyst that tested and developed guidance systems for aircrafts and missiles.

He served as a Deacon for the Cuba Avenue Church of Christ in Alamogordo from 1972 to 1985 at which time he was selected to serve as an Elder for that congregation. He served in that capacity for over 25 years. In 2010, he and Gail moved to Shallowater, TX to be closer to both mothers and help with their health needs. At that point, they began attending the 12th Street Church of Christ in Shallowater. It was there that Coy was appointed to serve as one of their Shepherds in December 2016 and continued serving in that capacity until his death.

Over the years, Coy became an accomplished woodworker and built or refurbished over 30 pieces of furniture for their home and family members and several more pieces for his shop. When Gail needed something built, he would tell her, “Draw me a diagram of what you want and I’ll see what I can do.” He joined the South Plains Woodturner’s Club in 2012 and became a somewhat accomplished woodturner concentrating on segmented turning. In the summer of 2020 during the Covid pandemic, he built a grandfather clock which he considered his greatest woodworking accomplishment.

He is survived by his wife Gail of 58 years, daughters Sandra Wheeler and husband, Russell, of Shallowater and Judy Corbin and husband, Keith, of Lubbock; his grandchildren, Jessika Wheeler and Alex Wheeler of Shallowater, Tyler Corbin and wife, Cailie of Midland, TX and Brooke Klein and husband, Taylor of Fort Worth, TX; he was additionally blessed by two great-grandsons, Hudson and Hayden Corbin of Midland with a great-grand-daughter on the way, Grace Elizabeth Corbin; sister-in-law Frances Townson of Melrose, NM, brothers-in-law Dale Robberson of Sanger, TX and Dennis Watson of Gardner, KS; and three nephews Derek Hunt, Darin Hunt, and David Hunt. Also, by a host of other relatives and friends.

Coy was preceded in death by both sets of grandparents, his dad, William F. (Spider) Hunt in 1977, brother, Doyle in 1989, and mother, Beatrice in 2016.

Coy touched the lives of many people with his love for Christ. He enjoyed studying the Bible, along with the Greek and Hebrew languages to strive for a better understanding of God’s word. Hundreds of people benefited from the knowledge he shared through his preaching, teaching and counseling. He also performed many wedding ceremonies and funeral services; and was always ready to share God’s word and talk about his love of God. His knowledge and guidance will be sorely missed.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Coy’s name to New Mexico Christian Children’s Home.
