On Wednesday, January 15, 2025 in Lubbock, Texas, Edwin Joel Chavez went to rest with his Heavenly Father. His life on earth was filled with passion, vibrance, and so much love. Born on June 28, 1959 in Santa Rosa, New Mexico, he grew up to become a man of action and intention, brave and determined until the very end. His love and passion were best expressed through his family, faith, and undeniably through his cooking.
He was our family storyteller and he truly lived a grand narrative. His story was filled with tales branching across his childhood and coming of age in Santa Rosa, New Mexico; his collegiate career at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces; raising his family in Albuquerque; and his final chapter filled by cheering on the Red Raiders in Lubbock, Texas. Most notably within these experiences, Edwin was very fond of a mission trip he took to Macedonia - an adventure which left a lasting impression on his life.
His legacy is one of loving and cherishing people. He welcomed hundreds of people from countless backgrounds and identities into the home he created with Mary. Every person was guaranteed three things when they entered the Chavez home:
Edwin is survived by his wife, Mary, his daughter and son-in-law, Morgan and Drew, his son, Gabriel, as well as his parents, Luciano and Henrietta, and his siblings, Elvin and Elitta and their families.
There will be two Celebrations of Life held for Edwin. The first will be on Saturday, February 1, 2025 at 10:00 am at Melonie Park Church in Lubbock, Texas. The second will be on Friday, February 28, 2025 at 10:00 am at Calvary Church in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
