Eloise Sanchez Newman

Eloise Sanchez Newman of Lubbock passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, November 12, 2023.  She was 84 years old.  Eloise was born on April 22, 1939, to Jose and Ofelia Sanchez in San Elizario, Texas. She graduated from Austin High School in El Paso, Texas.  She married Cecil Wayne Newman on June 15, 1957 and they were married for 40 years.  She lived in Amarillo, Texas most of her life. 

Eloise “Ellie” worked as a teacher at River Road High School until she retired in 2004.  She had many friends and touched many lives throughout all of her years of working.  Eloise was an avid tennis player and enjoyed competing until she was 70 years old.  Eloise was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Amarillo for many years.  She joined St. John the Baptist Catholic Church when she moved to Lubbock, Texas to live with her daughter.  She enjoyed reading, listening to music, watching sports and tending to her Hibiscus and Rose bushes.  Over her life she was able to travel and enjoy new sights.  Eloise had the most beautiful smile and loved to meet people.  Most of all, she loved every moment she spent with all of her grandchildren.

Eloise is preceded in death by her husband, Cecil W. Newman; and her parents, Jose and Ofelia Sanchez.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Jeannette Hanchey and husband Mike of Coppell, Texas, Christine Newman of Lubbock, Texas, Jeffrey Newman and wife Leigh Ann of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Catherine Bowles and husband Terry of Plano, Texas; grandchildren, Matthew and Rachel Newman of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Elise and Nicholas Bowles of Plano, Texas; and siblings, Mary Lacy and husband Steve, Ray Sanchez and wife Ysela, Joe Sanchez and wife Olivina, Tina Gonzalez, and Gracie Acevedo.  She will also be missed by her good friend, Lindy Whillock. 

Eloise’s family will receive friends and family at Combest Family Funeral Homes in Lubbock, Texas, on Thursday, November 16, 2023, from 5:00PM until 6:30PM, followed by the recitation of the Holy Rosary at 6:30PM. A funeral mass will be held on Friday, November 17, 2023, at 2:00PM at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Lubbock, Texas. Eloise will be laid to rest on Saturday, November 18, 2023, at 11:00AM, at Memorial Park Cemetery in Amarillo, Texas.

Flowers are welcome as Eloise loved flowers.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Hospice of Lubbock or St John the Baptist Catholic Church or that an act of kindness be done for someone in need today.
