Grace Lillian Emily Whitbread Bayne of Lubbock passed away on Thursday, August 7, 2014 at the age of 82. She was named after her paternal great aunt, paternal grandmother and paternal great grandmother. She was born May 22, 1932 in Glasgow, Montana to the late Frederick T. Whitbread and Emma (Nelson) Whitbread. The Whitbread family came to Glasgow in 1889. Seventy-seven years ago, two toddlers posed grudgingly with their mother in front of her shanty town laundry as a lady photographer from "back east", who would later become world famous, took their picture. Margaret Bourke-Whites's photograph was published in the premier edition of LIFE magazine on November 23, 1936 as a part of a feature which was billed as "a human document of American frontier life." New Deal, Montana was one of many boom towns that sprouted in what was probably one of America's largest work relief efforts of the Depression era, the construction of the giant earth filled Fort Peck dam. One of those toddlers was Grace along with her sister Betty and their mother Emma Nelson Whitbread. Mrs. Whitbread ran a laundry named Nelson Laundry. Grace learned at a very early age to work hard. Grace married Oliver David (Buddy) Bayne on August 17th, 1952. To this union, two children were born, David Andrew in 1958 and Deborah Kay in 1960. He preceded her in death in May of 1963. Grace worked as a homemaker lovingly caring for her children.
Grace loved the West and enjoyed history about life in the pioneer days. She bought her own horse when she was a young girl and then had to sell the horse to pay for Business College. She loved Gunsmoke and Bonanza and could watch those television shows for hours. She loved flowers and gardens and appreciated all of God's wonderful creation.
Her greatest joy and deep heart thankfulness is that her children and grandson have Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior!! She was a member of Green Lawn Church of Christ.
Those left to cherish her memory are her children, David Bayne of Bozeman, Montana and Debbie Bayne Brown of Lubbock, sister, Betty J. Martin of Montana; grandchildren, Jeremy Warren Brown who was truly the "apple of her eye" and Natalie Robinson and Brandy Tudor of Montana; and great grandchildren, Taj and Tre Barney of Montana. She is also survived by five nephews, three nieces as well as cousins. She was fondly loved by lifelong friend Sharon Thompson, as well as special friend Anita Alexander both of Montana.
David and Debbie will be eternally grateful and thankful for the blessings bestowed upon them from childhood into eternity by our loving cousin Jack and his wife, Johnnie Ruth Conatser of Choteau, Montana as well as all of the Meidinger and Paden family.
The family would like to give special thanks to Delia and Emilio Rubio, owners of Sweet Embrace Assisted Living in Lubbock. Grace resided with the Rubio's for the last nine years and considered the Rubio's to be family. The family appreciates all the love and gentle care provided to Grace by the Rubio's as well as the staff. Special thanks is also given to Calvert Home Health especially Regina Meeks, Grace's "favorite nurse" as well as Karen Hyatt and Patty Funck. Special thanks to Dr. Holly Stewart, PA Sandra Lee and Maribel Soto. The family also wants to give their heart fell thanks to Green Lawn Church of Christ and Colgate Church of Christ for their constant love and example to Grace.
