Ima Jean Cassel passed away peacefully in her home on December 8, 2014 at the age of 91 with her loved ones by her side after a long and full life. She was born January 1, 1923 in Alvarado, Texas to Ima Lee June Smith (mother) and Com H. Smith (father). Jean was the oldest and last remaining of her siblings: Peggy Lee Irving, Della June Martin, Frank Dan Smith, Nellie Smith and Judy Lynn Smith.
Jean attended the Harris College of Nursing at Texas Christian University but soon moved to Lubbock and made her home here. After retiring as a nurse, she went back to school at Texas Tech University to pursue her Bachelors and Masters degrees. Jean was a long time teacher in the Lubbock Independent School district teaching home economics and health care until her retirement.
Jean attended St. Paul Episcopal Church with her husband John and was loved and appreciated by her church family and community for her selfless support and faithfulness.
Jean is survived by her husband, John; son, Edward and wife Sharon; granddaughter, Brittany and many other family members who loved and cherished her. Jean and John were married in Lubbock on July 18, 1953. The song sang at Jean and John's wedding 61 years ago was "You'll Never Walk Along", and in 61 years of marriage, they never had to.
Services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, December 13, 2014 at St. Paul’s on the Plains Episcopal Church.
