Celeste left this life on March 10, 2014. She was one of nine children born to Robert Edgar and Margaret Katherine (Bowman) Austin on September 22, 1917. Her father was a part of the family that negotiated with the president of Mexico to bring American settlers to what is now the State of Texas. Her maternal grandfather was a medical doctor who served in the confederate Army during the Civil War. Her maternal grandmother’s maiden name was Eisenhower, and as a young child, her mother, played with Dwight D. Eisenhower who later became “General of the Armies” and then the 34th President of the United States.
She married the love of her life, Clyde Wesley Meeker on November 20, 1937. He preceded her in death on November 20, 1955.
She loved writing poetry and working outside in her flower gardens, she could recover a chair or build a house, fix a fence or milk a cow. She also could make drapes for your windows or put a patch on your jeans, or do almost anything.
She is survived by her sons, Carroll Meeker and wife Annice of Wolfforth and Wesley Meeker and wife Pat of Ft. Worth; daughter, Sandra Fulbright and husband Jeter of Lubbock; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Celeste was preceded in death by her parents and all eight of her siblings.
Visitation will be 2:00-6:00 p.m. Thursday, March 13, 2014 with family receiving friends 5:00-6:00 p.m. at Combest Family Memorial Chapel. Services are scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Friday, March 14, 2014 at Combest Family Memorial Chapel with interment to follow at Lamesa Memorial Park Cemetery at 2:30 p.m.
