Irene Mendez

Irene Flores Mendez, 82, of Lubbock, Texas passed away Tuesday, April 25, 2023. Irene was born December 7, 1940, in Lubbock to Menories and Salome Flores. Irene married the love of her life, Nicanor Z. Mendez, Sr. in 1955 until his passing in 2020. Irene was strong in her Catholic faith. She enjoyed music and had many hobbies including cooking, sewing, reading, and gardening. She was a strong, spunky spirit who generously cared for those around her, regardless of her circumstances. Irene loved her family, who were the center of her world.

Those left to cherish her memory include her children, Isabel Z. Mendez, Nicanor Mendez, Jr. (Rosemary), Cecilia Mendez, and David F. Mendez, II (Gloria); her siblings, Sofilla Morales, Raymond Flores, Helen Marin, Terecita Mendez, Nasario Torres, Jr., Linda Gutierrez, and Salome Salas; four granddaughters that she raised, San Juanita M. Dominguez (Daniel), Patricia M. Mendez, Stephanie I. Guzman (Joe), and Gina M. Mendez; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Irene was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Nicanor Z. Mendez, Sr.; one son, David F. Mendez, I; and five siblings, Abelia F. Mendez, Nasario Flores, Menories Flores, Jr., San Juanita Flores, and Martin Torres.

Visitation for Irene will be held 4:00 P.M.-8:00 P.M., Thursday, May 4, 2023, with Rosary at 6:00 P.M. in the Combest Family Memorial Chapel. A celebration of life will be held 10:00 A.M., Friday, May 5, 2023, also in the Combest Family Memorial Chapel.
