James Barnett

August 3, 1944 — April 28, 2022

James Barnett, 77, of Lubbock, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, April 28, 2022. He was born on August 3, 1944, in Merkel, Taylor County, Texas to the late Chester Eugene Barnett and Elizabeth Ann (Brown) Barnett.

James attended Portales High School, graduating with the Senior Class of 1962. He then attended New Mexico State University and Southwest Texas State University. He served his country proudly and was an honorably discharged veteran of the United States Army.

He met, and was married to Wonnie Barnett, on April 12, 1986, in Abilene.

James worked in the medical field as a Respiratory Therapist for Hendricks Children's Hospital in Abilene. He also served as the Hospital Administrator for Hamlin Memorial Hospital for over 10 years. James retired in 2009.

He loved woodworking and metal works, collecting and polishing rocks and was a true outdoors person. His grandchildren were a bright spot in his life and loved them dearly. James was a member of the First Baptist Church in Hamlin, Texas.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Wonnie; one son, Will Barnett and his wife Brandi of Lubbock; one daughter, Kathryn Martinez and her husband Ricky of Lubbock; one sister, Mary Jane Kozak of Plattsburg, New York; five grandchildren, Ethan Martinez, Avery Garza, Lucas Martinez, Willow Barnett and Will Barnett, Jr. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Celebration of Life Memorial Services will be held at 2 PM on Saturday, May 21, 2022, in the Combest Family Memorial Chapel. Reverend L. J. Wright, of the First Baptist Church in New Home, will be the officiant. Cremation arrangements and memorial services are under the personal care and direction of Combest Family Funeral Home.
