JL Cooper, 89 of Lubbock, TX passed away July 15, 2023 at home surrounded by loved ones.  The family will be hosting a visitation of family and friends from 6:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 20, 2023 at Combest Funeral Home in the Oak Crest Suite.  Services to celebrate JL’s life is scheduled on Friday, July 21, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. at West Texas Church, 8322 County Road 6500, Lubbock.  Burial will follow at Rest Haven Cemetery.

JL was born on May 17, 1934 to Claude and Vivian Cooper in Sentinel, OK.  He graduated from Sentinel High School in 1952.  JL married the love of his life, Mildred, on March 29, 1953 and they celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary this past March.  JL enjoyed nothing more than spending quality time with his friends and family, reading and spending time in the backyard watching the birds, squirrels and turtles.  His career was spent working for IGA, as a buyer for Furr’s Supermarket and food broker for Whitson King.  He received multiple awards while working for Furr’s and received the Whitson King Award.  JL and Mildred attended West Texas Church for 15 years.  JL was not quiet about his love for his Savior and could be found passing out cards, pocket pals and shouting “All God’s Children Say Amen” on Sunday morning.

JL is survived by Mildred his wife of 70 years, son Rick (Reta) Cooper of Lubbock, grandchildren; Riki (Rob) Underwood, Kary Cooper, Penny Pierce and John Pierce, great grandchildren: Jackson Underwood, Alyssa Underwood, Kayla (Michael) Pharr, Katlyn (Kaleb) Baker; great-great grandchildren: Jessica Pharr, Owen Pharr and Ryker Pharr; sisters Linda Maxwell, Beverly Hester and Betty Dixon; brothers; Roger and Danny Cooper and numerous nieces and nephews.

JL is preceded in death by his parents Claude and Vivian Cooper, his daughter Becky, his son Gary Lynn, three brothers and one sister.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to Covenant Medical Center/Palliative Care and Hospice of Lubbock.  In lieu of flowers donations are requested to West Texas Church designate Tzedakah Fund, 8322 County Road 6500, Lubbock, TX 79416.
