Joe Vega, 86, of Tahoka, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, August 4, 2022. Joe was born on August 6, 1935, in Robstown, Nueces County, Texas, to the late Carlos Vega and Asulema (Guerrero) Vega.
Joe was a cotton farmer in Lynn County most of his life, toiling in the field and making sure that his family was well taken care of and loved, just as much as they loved him. He retired from farming in 2021. He enjoyed bowling, eating with his family, playing the lottery and was a well-rounded family patriarch. He was brought up in the Catholic faith.
Those left to honor and cherish his memory include his children, Gloria (Ruben) Ayala of San Angelo, Joe Vega, Jr. of Kingsville, David Vega of Post, Raul (Cecilia) Vega of Post, Sylvia Vega of Post, Josie Vega of Lubbock, Joann Vega of Lubbock and Joyce Vega of Lubbock; three brothers, Robert (Virginia) Vega of New Home, Abel Vega of Tahoka, Frank (Rosie) Vega of Lubbock; two sisters, Erma (Lupe) Saldana of San Antonio and Dora (Javier) Blanco of Seagraves. Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Carlos and Asulema Vega; one daughter, Joanna Vega; three sisters, Lupe Pena, Juanita Rodriquez and Manuela Perez; two brothers, Samuel Vega and Carlos Vega, Sr.; 19 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren.
A time of visitation and reflection for Joe will be from 5 PM to 8 PM on Monday, August 8, 2022, at the Venue on Broadway, 2202 Broadway in Lubbock. Recitation of the rosary will be said at 6 PM that evening. Mass will be celebrated at 11 AM on Tuesday, August 9, 2022, at St. Jude Catholic Church, 1829 S. 4th, Tahoka, TX 79373. Reverend John Rathinam will be the Celebrant. Final rites and interment will follow in the Nevels Cemetery, in Tahoka, under the personal care and direction of Combest Family Funeral Homes and Crematory.
Pallbearers will be Mark Vega, Ronnie Blanco, Joel Rivas, Ronnie Vega, Robert Ayala, Rogue Rodriguez, Jacob Clay and David Vega, Jr.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations, in Joe’s memory, be made to the Abraham Vega Foundation, 5209 Valleyview Court, San Angelo, Texas 76904.
