John “Eugenio” Vasquez, Sr., 85, of Lubbock was received by his Savior on Saturday, March 1, 2014. He was born September 30, 1928 in Kerens, Texas to Ramon and Ysidra Vasquez. He was married to Minnie Rodriguez. The couple recently celebrated 65 years of marriage on August 18, 1948. John was retired from Texas Tech University Recreational Sports Department where he served as a grounds keeper for 19 years. One of his many pleasures was preparing the football field for games. His love was sharing Christ, singing to the Lord, watching is favorite sports teams, Texas Rangers, Texas Tech and the Dallas Cowboys, and spending time with his family.
Those left to cherish his memory are his son, Carlos Vasquez and wife Elidia of Lubbock; daughters, Elsa Velasquez and husband Vicente of Idalou and Rosie Reyes and husband Ricky of Garland; daughter-in-law, Norma Vasquez wife of the late Aden Vasquez, Sr.; 21 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Minnie; sons, Aden, Sr., Eduardo, and John Vasquez, Jr.; grandson, Aden Vasquez, Jr.; granddaughter, Denise V. Pena; and eight siblings.
Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 4, 2014 at Combest Family Memorial Chapel with a prayer service beginning at 6:30 p.m. Services are scheduled for 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 5, 2014 at Primera Iglesia Bautista with Pastor Eloy Felan officiating. Interment will follow at Peaceful Gardens Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Johnny Gutierrez, Jr., J.T. Gutierrez, Johnny Vasquez, III, Michael Dawson, Danny Vasquez, and Peter Gonzales.
