Jose "Joe" Mata

Joe was known to be a competitive man in anything he did; from video games such as Mario Kart and Tower Fall to a variety of sports such as volleyball and even golf. However, since childhood, his favorite sport was basketball. He worked hard, having the time of his life, and winning first place in many tournaments, especially Hoop It Ups. Joe was a jokester always wanting to make people laugh. He loved listening to all kinds of music, and he loved singing. He had a smile that would light up a room in which people couldn't help but notice and smile back.

Joe married Alice Flores September 19, 1998, in Lubbock, Texas at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, and they were blessed with six amazing children. He worshipped God every Sunday, most Wednesdays and Holy Days of Obligation at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. He served at Our Lady of Guadalupe as an usher for a short time. He was a loving husband and father who loved family trips and playing cards and board games. Most importantly he came to know the true meaning of life by reading God's Word and becoming a true witness of the blessings of praying the rosary, every day. Joe worked for the United States Postal Service for over 25 years.

Joe is survived by his wife Alice Mata of Lubbock; father Joe Mata, III and wife Mary of Brownfield; mother Elizabeth Thomas and husband Jerry of Lubbock; children Joseph, Samuel, Alyssa, Abigail, Judith, and Naomi Mata; siblings Diana Bowmen (Mike), Melissa Esquibel (Dylan), Mike Mata (Roxanne) all of Lubbock, Joe Daniel Mata and Crystal Morin (Daniel) all of Brownfield; along with many nieces, nephews and loved ones.

Visitation will take place from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday May 11th, at the Venue on Broadway with a Rosary at 6:00 p.m. A Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday May 12th, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church.

Cremation services are under the direct care of Combest Family Funeral Homes and Crematory.
