Mary Nell Askew of Lubbock passed away on Monday, April 21, 2014 at the age of 84. She was born August 21, 1929 in Meadow, Texas to the late Murray L. and Waltha Mae (Hancock) Nettles. She graduated from New Home High School. Mary Nell married Clifton Ashcraft in 1947 until his death in December 1958. She was the face of Lynn County Farm Bureau for 38 years and a former Lynn County Sherriff Posse Sweetheart. Mary Nell was an avid volleyball player, golfer, motorcycle rider, barrel racer in the rodeos, and a pet lover. She was an avid basketball player receiving a scholarship to Wayland Baptist College as a Flying Queen.
Those left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Jeri Schumacher of Horseshoe Bay, Texas and Dawn Mackenzie and husband, Dave of Roswell, Georgia; siblings, Virginia Pendergrass, Christine Pendergrass and Ronnie Nettles and wife Bertha; 2 grandchildren; and 1 great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Harold Nettles, brother- in - law, Robert A. Pendergrass and Jay Pendergrass.
Family will receive friends from 3:00 -5:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 24, 2014 at Combest Family Memorial Chapel, no formal service will be scheduled.
