A wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. Mary was known by those who loved her to be caring, selfless and uplifting. Mary Alice Castillo, 68, of Lubbock, Texas, died at her home after a battle with cancer, on January 21, 2024.
She was born in Taft, Texas on July 30, 1955 to Victor and Olga Maldonado. Mary was one of 9 children. She is preceded in death, by her parents; siblings, Ricardo Maldonado, Janie Maldonado, Victoria Maldonado; grandson, Joshua Paul Rodriguez; and nephew, Franciso Cruz.
Surviving siblings are, Anita Maldonado, Victor (Patsy) Maldonado, Irma (Martin) Ramirez, Lee Andrew Maldonado; all of Lubbock and Delia (Patrick Delgado) Risley; of Katy.
Mary met the love of her life, Jimmy Escobedo in 1989 and they spent the next 35 years with one another, building countless memories. Together they enjoyed traveling to New Mexico and Oklahoma, visiting casinos, and hiding their winnings from one another.
Mary was a loving and caring mother to all 5 of her children and each one meant the world to her. Left behind to continue building her legacy are, Lori Martinez, Andrea (Robert) Mireles, Melissa Rodriguez, Robby (Dominica) Castillo and Matthew (Leticia Montiel) Castillo; all of Lubbock.
Though she loved bingo, dancing and her novellas, Mary’s favorite role was that as a grandmother. She treasured her time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren and loved being their grandma, never failing to beat them at 31 on family game night & willingly taking a photo with a silly filter, her ways of showing each of them love, was special. Mary leaves behind 17 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Everyone who knew Mary knew how much she enjoyed spending time with her family & attending bar-b-ques, especially if shrimp or jalapeno poppers were on the menu.
Mary will always be remembered for her strength, love, laughter, and support to all those she loved. We will always imagine hearing her laugh or say “yeah right” one more time. We could not have asked for a better mother and will miss her every day. Mary’s memory will live on in the hearts of all those who loved her.
