Michael Atcheson

Michael Edward Atcheson entered eternal rest on Saturday May 11th, 2024 in Lubbock, Texas. He was born August 22, 1941 to James and Lucille Atcheson. He is survived by his wife Judi Atcheson, sister Anne Mcnaughton (Robert), sons Jordan (Kaori), Brandon, and two grandsons Rion and Theo. Step children Jeff Lampe (Jennifer) and Jill Pennington (Collier) Step grandchildren Emma & Trip Pennington and Greg Lampe. He was preceded in death by infant twins, a brother and sister, his parents and two dear brothers: Dan and Tim Atcheson.

Michael was educated in Lubbock Public Schools and graduated from Monterey High School in 1960 and Texas Tech in 1966. He was an architect and landscape architect. He was in two professional bands: The Velveteens and The Traveling Salesman.

Michael worked with his father’s architectural firm Atcheson, Atkinson, Cartwright and Rorex and did preliminary design for the Mahon Courthouse and Office Building. He worked for four years in Hawaii designing parks and buildings. After returning to Lubbock, Michael worked with his father’s firm Atcheson Cartwright and Associates, and an eventual partnership of Atcheson and Associates. Michael then joined Texas Tech Department of Facilities Planning and was the project manager for the Preston Smith Library and United Spirit Arena. Michael also worked for SHW architects of Dallas, Texas and was the project manager for numerous public schools and university buildings. Before retirement Michael was the construction project manager for the Community Health Center of Lubbock.

Michael was also the president and manager of the Lazy K Ranch in Southland, Texas. He helped with the cattle work, farming leases and was an avid hunter of wild hogs, killing at least 45.

Michael was a member of Community Foundation, Lubbock Music Club, associate member of Lubbock Republican Women, a past member of Lubbock Historical Commission, volunteer for the American Cancer Society and was co-chair of 1992 Lubbock Cattle Baron’s Ball.

He was a lifelong Lutheran and married his wonderful wife Judith Atcheson on June 30th, 2000.

Michael’s Christian faith never faltered during his battle and it only served to strengthen his resolve; he moved forward each day without fear and his bravery and trust in the Lord inspired all those around him.

Please join us in celebrating his life on Thursday May 16th, 2024 between 5:00pm-7:00pm at Combest Family Funeral Home, 2210 Broadway St, Lubbock, TX 79401. Michael’s funeral service will be held Friday morning May 17th, 2024, at 10am at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 2221 Avenue W, Lubbock, TX 79411.
