Michael Scott Chamales was born April 5th, 1970, in Galveston, Texas. He passed on April 19, 2025, after a long battle with cancer. He was the first child and only son of Michael H. Chamales and Linda L. Chamales. He spent the first few years of his life there, before moving with his family to Oregon at age 5. He grew up in rural western Oregon outside of Portland and graduated from Scappoose High School in 1988.
After graduating high school, Michael moved to Texas and attended Abilene Christian University. He majored in Biology and graduated Summa Cum Laude in 1991. During his time at ACU, Michael met and married the love of his life, Melissa Holt. They moved to Lubbock, Texas and attended Texas Tech University School of Medicine, graduating in 1995. He did an internship in General Surgery at Texas Tech Health Science Center from 1995-1996, then a residency in Emergency Medicine at the University of Oklahoma in Oklahoma City from 1996-1999. While in Oklahoma, Michael’s only child, Alexander Chamales was born.
Upon finishing his residency, Michael moved back to Lubbock and began working as an attending Emergency Medicine Physician and Assistant Professor of Surgery at University Medical Center. He worked there until 2006, when he accepted a position as an Emergency Medicine Physician at Covenant Medical Center and Covenant Children’s Hospital. He became Assistant Medical Director at Covenant Medical Center Emergency Department in 2012. He then became Medical Director of Covenant Medical Center and Covenant Children’s Hospital Emergency Departments in 2015 and held this position until 2023. He remained Assistant Director at Covenant Medical Center until his illness related retirement in early 2025.
Michael was a loving husband, father, brother and uncle. He was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ, most recently attending Sunset Church of Christ. He enjoyed traveling with his wife and son. He was an avid hunter and outdoorsman, spending untold hours at the family ranch. Michael felt very proud of the care he provided the people of Lubbock and surrounding communities as an emergency physician for more than 25 years.
Michael S. Chamales, MD is survived by his wife of 34 years, Melissa Chamales, his son Alexander Scott Chamales, JD, his parents Michael H. Chamales, MD, and Linda Chamales, JD, his sister Michelynda (Dr. Reagan) Crossnoe, niece Autumn (Reid) Bellow, nephew Remington Cole (Kaitlyn) Crossnoe, grandnephew and grandniece, Oliver and Scotland Bellow, and mother-in-law, Beckie Holt. He was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Melvin Holt.
A time of reflection and visitation will be held from 5 PM to 7 PM on Sunday, April 27, 2025, at Combest Family Funeral Homes Venue on Broadway, 2202 Broadway (next door to the funeral home). Funeral services will be held at 1 PM on Monday, April 28, 2025, in the auditorium of Sunset Church of Christ, 3723 34th Street, Lubbock, Texas 79410. Taylor Robles will be the officiant. Final rites and interment will follow in Peaceful Gardens Memorial Park under the personal care and direction of Combest Family Funeral Homes.
The pallbearers will be Alexander Chamales, JD, Reagan Crossnoe, MD, Remington Cole Crossnoe, Reid Bellow, Derek Skinner, MD and Ory Johnson, MD.
