Mildred Eckstein

Mildred (Smith) Eckstein, 91, of Lubbock, passed away on Saturday, September 10, 2022. She was born to Truman Smith and Eunice (Spickard) Smith on August 16, 1931, in Morton, Texas.  Mildred grew up in Morton and later attended Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Tx, where she graduated in 1951 with a bachelor’s in education, later obtaining her master’s degree in special education from Eastern New Mexico University. She also married the love of her life Stephen Eckstein Jr. on December 25, 1951, having four children together.

Mildred worked for many years teaching remedial courses, english, special education, as well a variety of other subjects. Teaching was her passion, but she always made time to spend with her husband and children as well as being an active member in her church. She retired after fifteen years teaching at Michigan Christian College.

Mildred is survived by her son, Brian Eckstein; son in laws David Joyner, Billy Fox, and Kevin Skidmore; sisters Viola Hawthorne, Dorothy Baird, and Bennie O’Brien; eleven grandchildren; and eighteen great grandchildren.

She is proceeded in death by her husband Stephen Eckstein Jr.; daughters Pam Joyner, Nancy Fox, and Jan Skidmore; brother Manuel Smith; sisters Mary Lee Carter, Marlene Smith, and Maxine Burns; and parents Truman Smith and Eunice Smith.

A graveside service will be held on Thursday, September 15, 2022, at 2:00 p.m., at Morton Memorial Cemetery.
