Ovell Reed of Lubbock passed away on Friday, May 24, 2013 at the age of 99. Funeral services are scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 28, 2013 at Combest Family Memorial Chapel with interment to follow at the City of Lubbock Cemetery.
Ovell was born to Normie and Elizabeth Walker in Seymour, Texas on July 24, 1913. The family moved to Lubbock in a covered wagon in 1916. Ovell was a charter member of Arnett Benson Baptist Church when it started in 1946, and she was a well-loved Sunday School teacher for many years. Her membership with that church continued as the congregation moved to a new building and became Broadview Baptist Church. Ovell’s faith in God and love in action for family and friends were always at the core of her life. Her family thanks Rev. Ed Clark, Richard Powers, Winston Berryman, and the many members of the Broadview Baptist Church for their love, support, and ministry to Ovell throughout her life.
Ovell loved life. She worked for many years for Stanley Home Products. In her retirement, she raised beautiful chow chows and parakeets. She especially enjoyed family trips to the Texas coast where she would take walks along the beach looking for shells and “treasurers”. She will always be remembered for her sparkling blue eyes, beautiful smile and remarkable resiliency.
Ovell was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Reed; sons, Clarence and Stanley Reed; and daughter, Floydell Neugent. She is survived by her sister, Opal Jean Thompson; son-in-law, Dean Neugent and wife Maynell; daughter-in-law, Barbara Reed; grandchildren, Melanie Webster and husband Cris, Terry Ball and husband Tim, Bradley Neugent and wife Stephanie, Christopher Neugent and wife Leslie, Michelle Cummins and husband Scott, Kim Reed-Revert, Tracy Holly, Al Reed, Carmen Reed, Floyd Reed, Jr., Marilyn Reed, and Stevie Parker; 24 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren.
Ovell was cared for here on earth by the angels of Hospice of Lubbock, Darla Harrington, Diana Lara, Nicole Shields, Dr. Jeremy Brown, and Rev. Elizabeth Abraham. All of them gave Ovell love and comfort. While at Porch Swing, Ovell was blessed with the loving attention by Carolyn and Scott Herron.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to Hospice of Lubbock, 3702 21st Street, Lubbock, Texas 79410.
