Philip Scott Carter

Philip Scott Carter was welcomed by Jesus to his new home in paradise on March 17, 2024, at the age of 57.  Philip was born in Las Cruces, New Mexico, to Joe and Carolyn (Stone) Carter, on September 25, 1966. He was raised in Ira, Texas, where he graduated high school, and then moved on to college at Angelo State and Texas Tech University. There he earned his undergraduate degree in Animal Science. Then he later returned to Angelo State to further pursue his love for Range and Wildlife Management and earned his master’s degree.

After graduation, Philip worked for the Natural Resources Conservation Service, and eventually made his way to Plains, TX.  On January 8, 1999, Philip went on a blind date with Vee Ann Fitzgerald, and life was never the same after that. They married on February 26, 2000. They made their home in Plains for 24 years.  They were blessed with three daughters, an amazing community and two loving church families.  He served as a deacon at the Denver City Church of Christ and the Hillside Church of Christ for many years, and recently served as elder at the Hillside Church of Christ. Philip spent his time ranching, fishing, hunting and chasing not only his daughters but all his nieces and nephews in all their numerous activities.  Stock show seasons were fun but busy time for many years for their family. They were blessed to have their stock show family to support and work together.  He was rarely found without a child on his lap or helping someone to learn a new skill.

Those left to honor and cherish his memory include his wife, Vee Ann.  His daughters: Madison Carter of Lubbock, TX; Marka Carter of College Station, TX; Mikah Carter of San Angelo, TX; Sisters: Kerri Charlton and John of Lubbock, TX, Kristi Smith and Jay of Nashville, TN; Mother in law: Judy Fitzgerald of Plains, TX; brothers in-law: Nick Olenik of Lubbock, TX; Vince Fitzgerald and Shelley of New Deal, TX; sister in-law Vonda Jones and Allan of Lubbock, TX.  He had a host of nieces and nephews and was known as Mr. Dillup to his three favorite cowpokes.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Joe and Carolyn Carter, and his father in-law Vennum Fitzgerald.

Celebration of Life services will be held on Friday, March 22, 2024, at First Plains Church in Plains, TX, at 2 p.m.  There will be a visitation following the service and the family invites friends and family to share memories and thoughts of Philip with them at that time.  In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to New Mexico Christian Children’s Home in Portales, NM, or Lubbock Children’s Home in Lubbock, TX.
