Philip Malcolm Hopkins, 69, of Lubbock passed away Saturday, November 6, 2021. He was born July 31, 1952 in Bakersfield California to Alfred A., Jr, and Iola Iva (Malcolm) Hopkins. In 1962, his mother moved the family back to her hometown of Lubbock, Texas as the result of a divorce. Phil and his mother moved around through the years living in different places like Tulsa, Oklahoma, San Diego and Palm Springs, California for her teaching career. They ended their journey back in Lubbock where she did some substituting and she and Phil lived in her original house on 39th street. Phil's hobbies included Astronomy, making telescopes, hunting, and collecting gemstones. He formed a company called Morningstar Optics to sell his hand-made lenses, mirrors and telescopes.
Phil is survived by his brother, Steve Hopkins and wife Karen, of Midland Texas; sister, Diane Sullivan and husband Paul, of Mazatlan, Mexico; aunts, Velda Wilson of Lubbock, Texas and Emma Jean Goode of Vista, California; nephews, Mike Hopkins and wife Karen, of New Braunfels, Texas, David Hopkins and wife Brandi, of Cleburne, Texas, and Jason Bechard, of San Diego, California; as well as numerous cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Iola Iva Hopkins and Alfred A. Hopkins Jr.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff at Heritage Oaks Nursing Center for the care Phil received.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, November November 11, 2021 at the City of Lubbock Cemetery.
