Randy Ray Tungate of Lubbock triumphed over his battle with cancer on April 2, 2014 at the age of 62. Randy lived his life as a devoted servant of God and shared his love for the Lord with everyone he met. He was a light to those around him and a master of puns and cheesy jokes. He was born on April 7, 1951 in Effingham, Illinois to Eldon “Cotton” and Caroline Bergen Tungate. On June 16, 1972 he married Pamela Wood in Flora. They had two sons, Aaron and Adam. Randy was preceded in death by his wife, Pamela Tungate, in 2008 and his father, Eldon “Cotton” Tungate in 2013. He married Lynda Knoll on December 6, 2008 in Lubbock. He is survived by his wife, Lynda Knoll Tungate, of Lubbock and his two sons: Aaron Tungate and wife Valisa of Ft. Worth, Texas and their children, Luke, Ben, and Vayle; Adam Tungate and wife Carrie of Lubbock and their children, Ally, Branson, and Ella; his mother Caroline Tungate of Flora, Ill.; one sister, Nancy Buchannan and husband Chuck of Flora, Ill.; one brother, Mark Tungate and wife Sherri of Flora, Ill.; several nieces, a nephew, and countless friends. There was nothing more important to Randy than his love of God and his family.
Randy went to Flora High School, graduating in 1969. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Education from Illinois State University and continued on to Abilene Christian University where he graduated with his Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy in 1991. Randy spent his life helping people and that was reflected in his career path. He had many jobs throughout his life such as being the Preacher at Flora Church of Christ in Flora, Ill. Principal at 20th Street Christian School in Rockford, Ill., New England Christian Academy in West Springfield, Mass. and Anderson Christian School in Anderson, Ind.; being the Director of the Texas Boys Ranch in Lubbock, TX, to his dream job of Licensed Professional Counselor with Covenant Counseling Center (located on Broadway) in Lubbock, TX where he was employed for 12 years until his retirement in October 2013. Randy always stated that he starred on Broadway for 12 years. He led several cancer support groups at Joe Arrington Cancer Center and donated his counseling services to those in need in the name of his late wife, Pamela Tungate for years after her death. Randy was a member of Monterey Church of Christ.
Formal visitation with the family will be from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Friday, April 4, 2014 at Covenant Counseling Center, 1302 Broadway, in Lubbock. A Celebration of Life Service will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, April 5, 2014 at Monterey Church of Christ. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Covenant Foundation, 3623 22nd Place, Lubbock, TX 79410, in the name of Randy Tungate to benefit cancer patients and their families in need.
