Roger Gomez

Roger Gomez was born on March 7, 1930, in Canovanas, Puerto Rico and passed away at the age of 94 in Lubbock on January 9, 2025. 

Roger’s life was an example of the American dream. He spent his childhood in Puerto Rico until moving to Chicago at the age of 22, where, across the conveyor belt at Farley’s Candy Company, he met the love of his life, Judy. One day after work as he walked down the sidewalk, he saw a poster that read “Join the Air Force and see the world”. He went in the recruiting office, signed up and the next day was on his way to basic training in San Antonio. After returning from basic training, they were married in 1956. For 22 years (including a year in Vietnam), they served their country on Air Force bases in California, England (where Mark was born), Indiana (where Lisa and Steve were born), New Mexico, Germany and South Dakota. 

Along the way, their spiritual life grew and their decision-making process began being formed by the guidance of the Spirit and the value of a church community which eventually led them, after retiring from the Air Force in 1977, to Arlington, Texas. During their 23 years in Arlington, Roger worked for the US Post Office for 19 years and then held a variety of other jobs serving people at Arlington Charities, The Ballpark in Arlington and as a deacon for the California Lane Church of Christ and enjoying being “grandpa”. 

He left the fertile soil of North Texas in 2010 and brought his gardening touch to the dry, dusty dirt of West Texas. He loved working in the yard and providing neighbors and church members with bags full of vegetables. His years in Lubbock were spent continuing to cheer on his kids and grandkids in all of their activities. 

Roger will best be remembered for his love of family, service to others and his sense of humor.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 68 years, Judy; children, Mark and Shari Gomez, David and Lisa Langford, Steve and Shawna Gomez; grandchildren, Trent and Brooke Langford, Kyle and Devon Bullock, Ian and Mary duPont, Jon and Kenzi Gomez, Hayden and Krysten Gomez, Landon and Savannah Gomez, Jackson and Abbey Setliff; great-grandchildren, Levi and Nathan Bullock, Bostyn and Lyndon Langford, Callie Jo and Laynee Gomez, Harper duPont and baby duPont (on the way). 

A visitation honoring his life will be held on Wednesday, January 15, at 10:00am at Quaker Avenue Church of Christ in the Griffith Family Center. Following the visitation, a memorial service will be held at 11:00 am in the Quaker Avenue Church of Christ auditorium and will be livestreamed.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in his honor to Quaker Avenue Church of Christ or to the Lubbock Christian University Women’s Basketball program.
