Roland Erwin

Roland Erwin, 82, of Portales, New Mexico passed away at UMC Hospital in Lubbock on Wednesday, January 29, 2014 at 5:00 p.m. Texas time.  He was born September 10, 1931 in Hill County, Texas to the late Herbert B. and Ollie Irene Erwin.  Roland married Florene McNutt on May 31, 1957 in Portales.  Florene died from injuries in an automobile accident on October 29, 1961.  There were no children born to this union.

Roland married Elaine Shults Lenard on June 23, 1963 in Portales.  She had three children by a previous marriage: Preston Lenard, Deanna Lenard and Austin Lenard.  Roland and Elaine had one daughter, Leticia Erwin and one adopted son, Michael Erwin. 

Roland served in the U.S. Air Force 1953-1958.  He retired from ENMU in 1987 after 26 years of service as a mechanic.  He was a member of First Baptist Church for most of his life.  He loved to gather wood to burn in the fireplace he built in his home.  After retirement from ENMU he did yard work, worked as a custodian at First Baptist Church, and at Wheeler Mortuary.  He spent the remainder of his retirement years working around his home doing improvement and repairs.

Memorial services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 1, 2014 at First Baptist Church in Portales.
