Roy Kirkland, a dedicated farmer, loving father, and grandfather, passed away at the age of 81 on November 21, 2024. Roy lived a full and meaningful life, marked by his tireless work ethic, his love for the land, and devotion toward his family.
Roy was born on November 30, 1942, to Floyd and Trudy Kirkland, in Lubbock Texas. He was raised in Acuff where he attended Roosevelt ISD. He spent his childhood cultivating a love for farming and developing a deep bond with the land that would stay with him for all his days. Roy married the love of his life, Betty Lackey, in 1963. Together, they raised three children—Valerie, Jeff and Glenn—and built a family rooted in values of honesty, hard work, and kindness.
Known for his quiet strength and dry sense of humor, Roy was a man of few words but deep conviction. He believed in the importance of self-reliance, honesty and integrity. With weathered hands and steady resolve, he showed his children and grandchildren the true meaning of Grit and determination. Despite the challenges of farming in an ever-changing world, Roy never wavered in his commitment and love for the land. He often shared with his family that he never worked a day in his life because he truly loved what he did. It wasn’t a job; it was a way of life.
In his later years, Roy found joy in spending time with his grandchildren, who affectionately called him "Pops". He took great pride in watching them grow and in passing down the lessons he had learned, both about farming and life. Roy’s legacy will live on in the values he instilled in his children and grandchildren, and on the farm that his family will continue to care for.
Roy was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Betty; daughter, Valerie; long time companion and friend Weedon; his parents, Floyd and Trudy; his sisters, Helen Reid, Dorothy Scavone and Juanita Barnett; and brothers, W.T. Bo Kirkland and James Kirkland. He is survived by two sons: Jeff and wife Tammy of Littlefield, Glenn and wife Shanna of Cotton Center; his seven grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family will be having a celebration of life that be held where Roy loved it most-on the farm. Anyone who would like to attend is welcome. They will be gathered west of Cotton Center at K&K farms in the barn on Saturday, November 23rd, from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to First Baptist Church Cotton Center or Texas Boys Ranch.
Roy Kirkland will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to family and farming. His life was one of quiet service and profound impact, and his memory will continue to inspire all who knew him. May he rest in peace, surrounded by the land he loved.
