Sheryl Jean (Walker) Black, died on June 20, 2023 in Lubbock, Texas. She was 76 years old. She was born on August, 22, 1946, in Boston, Massachusetts, and grew up in Germany where her parents were missionaries. She attended German schools and graduated top of her class from the Kopernicus Schule in Berlin, Germany. She returned to the United States to attend college, first at York College (Nebraska), where she earned an Associate’s degree in Science and later at Abilene Christian College (Texas) where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. She taught 1st grade for 2 years in Pueblo, Colorado. Sheryl married Thomas Archie Black on July 23rd, 1969. Sheryl and Tom spent 50 years serving as missionaries in Europe, first in Germany and Austria, and for the last 30 years in Bulgaria. Sheryl was a self-proclaimed “party girl,” always looking for an excuse to get family and friends together to share food, games, and laughter.
Sheryl was preceded in death by her parents Richard and Elaine Walker and infant son Thomas Richard Black. She is survived by her husband Thomas Black; daughters and sons-in-law: Elaine and Bruce Gilstrap of Lubbock, Texas; Heidi and Kenneth Coombes of Lewisville, Texas; six grandchildren: Erin and Hannah Gilstrap; Elliott, Everett, Eddison, and Juliett Coombes; aunt Helen Hinds of Portland, Oregon; four siblings: brothers Gary, Archie, and Harold Walker, and sister Winnie Worley and all their families; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends scattered all around the world.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, June 24, at 2:00pm, at Sunset Church of Christ. A funeral service will be held following the visitation at 2:30pm on Saturday, June 24 at Sunset Church of Christ.
