Sofia Ulery

Sofia Ulery of Lubbock passed away on Wednesday, November 13, 2013 at the age of 74.  She was born December 3, 1938 in Hondo, Texas to Perfecto and Tomasita (Constante) Valles.  Sofia grew up in Hondo and married Lon Ulery, Sr. on December 30, 1970 in Jefferson, Texas.  The couple moved to Lamesa shortly after where she worked as a cook for First Baptist Church until retiring. Sofia moved to Lubbock in 1999 to be closer to her children.  She was a member at the Lubbock Seventh Day Adventist Church.  She loved collecting spoons, bowls and “shiny things”.  She was also a gardener which allowed her to enhance her rock collection.  Sofia also had a sweet tooth and could often be found eating a donut.  She had a special bond and love for her cat Frisky and three rats, Oliver, Cisco and Poncho.

Those left to cherish her memory are her daughters, MaryAnn Ulery and Loni Shaffer and husband Sam, all of Lubbock; son, Lon, Jr. and wife Melissa of Lubbock; two sisters, Margie Valles and Cello Esquivel of Hondo; five grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Sofia was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lon in 1991; and 14 siblings.

Visitation will begin at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 17, 2013 at Combest Family Funeral Homes with the family receiving friends from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.  Memorial services are scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Monday, November 18, 2013 at the Lubbock Seventh Day Adventist Church 5302 Elgin Avenue.
