Sylvia Ann “Grammy” Mitchell, 89, of Wolfforth, was lifted into heaven by her Lord and Savior early Wednesday morning, and to be rejoined with her loving husband James. Sylvia was born on December 28, 1935, in Lubbock, Texas, to the late Oldham Bufford Wright and Lois Katherine (Akins) Wright.
While in high school at New Deal, she was active in playing basketball and being part of the State Championship team in girls basketball in 1953. She then graduated with her senior class in 1954.
Sylvia met the love of her life, James P. Mitchell, and they were united in marriage on November 6, 1954, in New Deal, Texas. Mr. Mitchell preceded her in death on November 26, 2023.
Sylvia loved to read, enjoyed sewing, doing crossword puzzles, and watching Jeopardy on the television. She also loved to watch the movie Lonesome Dove as much as possible. According to her family, she was an excellent cook, especially her chicken fried steak, chocolate chip cookies and other decadent desserts. She and James were faithful fans of TTU men's and women's basketball and even held season tickets and attended games prior to their health issues. Sylvia adored her grandchildren and great grandchildren so much and made it a point to attend all their activities. She was a former member of the First Baptist Church in Wolfforth for many years. She then attended Caregivers Sunday School Class in Wolfforth and would then go to New Home Baptist Church in New Home since 2009. She was a faithful servant of God in all ways.
Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Cindy Stephens and husband Steve of Wolfforth; her son, Kevin Mitchell and wife Tammy; a brother, Mike Wright and wife Tina of Wolfforth; a sister, Yvonne Heath of Lubbock; a brother in law, Bill Mitchell of Lubbock. She also leaves behind 7 grandchildren: Chelsey Groves, Seth Stephens, Mikka James, Shea Askew, Morgan Saint, Hailey Hogg, and Merritt Hammonds; and 19 great-grandchildren, with one on the way. Holding a dear spot in her heart and life, is her God sent angel and caregiver for the last three years, Martha Watkins. Martha cared for both her and James till their last moments on this earth, of which the family is eternally grateful. The family would like to thank the nurses at Covenant Palliative Care Unit and Veronica Castillo for their wonderful loving care of Sylvia. Sylvia was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
