Corporal Tomas I. Sandoval, a stalwart Marine and cherished friend, departed this earthly realm on September 12th, 2024, to assume his post at the pearly gates. Born on February 19th, 1954, in Pecos, New Mexico, Tom’s journey of valor and dedication began at a young age. At just 18, he answered the call to serve his nation by joining the United States Marine Corps. During the tumultuous years of the Vietnam War, Tom distinguished himself as an Automotive Maintenance Technician with the 3rd Marine Division, Fleet Marine Force Pacific. His exemplary service earned him commendations for meritorious service, reflecting his unwavering commitment and bravery. Tom’s journey continued with the 2nd Marine Division Fleet Marine Force at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, where his dedication to duty remained steadfast until his honorable discharge on May 15th, 1978, after three years of selfless service.
Upon leaving the Marine Corps, Tom’s resilience and work ethic shone brightly in the oilfield industry for 15 years. His path then led him to Lubbock, where he made his mark at RC Taylor, Builder’s Squared, and Home Depot. For the past 15 years, Tom was a valued member of the Home Depot family, known for his integrity, kindness, and unwavering dedication.
In recent weeks, following an unexpected fall, Tom faced health challenges that confounded medical experts. In his final days, he was surrounded by a devoted circle of friends, colleagues, and fellow veterans—those who stood by him with the same steadfastness he had always shown in his service. Their presence ensured that Tom was not alone as he transitioned to his final command.
Tom’s legacy of courage, camaraderie, and commitment to his country and community will be remembered with profound respect and pride. His spirit lives on through the friends who cherished him and the countless lives he touched. Tom is survived by his brother, Joseph L. Sandoval, sister, Rose and many nieces and nephews, his Home Depot family and a close-knit circle of friends who hold his memory dear and will carry forward the values he embodied.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Aurelio and Gloria Sandoval; sister, Liz Padilla; and brother Marty Sandoval.
A memorial service, with livestreaming on this webpage, to honor Tom’s remarkable life and service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 21, 2024, at Combest Family Memorial Chapel. In lieu of flowers, it is requested that donations be made to the Marine Corps League Detachment 519 to continue supporting the ideals Tom held so dear. Toms friends would like to thank the VFW and Marine Corp League for their constant visits at the hospital and final salute provided at his passing, as well as the University Medical Center SICU Staff, Doctors and Staff for the excellent care provided.
Corporal Tomas I. Sandoval’s legacy is one of steadfast service, enduring honor, and a heart full of dedication. He will be remembered not only for his distinguished military service but also for his lasting impact on all who had the privilege to know him. Semper Fidelis, Tom.
