Dr. Tony Bryan Smitherman was born September 16, 1965, in McLean, Texas to Tony and Monta Jean Smitherman. He joined his family in heaven December 6, 2024, after a brief hospitalization.
Bryan attended school in McLean where he was active in sports, 4-H, and FFA. He was a member of the McLean Methodist Church where he played piano and organ and was active in the youth group. Bryan attended Texas Tech University earning his Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science. He was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity where he made lifelong friends. He was a member of the meat judging team and the student senate. After his undergraduate degree, Bryan attended medical school at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. He returned to Lubbock for his residency followed by becoming a partner with the Center for Orthopedic Surgery in Lubbock, Texas.
Bryan was highly involved in the Lubbock Community. He was a devoted and active member of First United Methodist Church and loved singing in the Chancel Choir. He served on many committees including Friends of Music, Vesper Concert Series, Church Council, and pastoral, organist, and music director committees. He cherished working with the visiting organists from England who became dear friends. He was active in the Lubbock Chorale and many other civic organizations. Bryan was a loyal Texas Tech fan and enjoyed attending football and basketball games.
Bryan was a beloved and highly respected orthopedic surgeon, completing his residency at University Medical Center in Lubbock where he was honored as Resident of the Month at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in March of 1996. He was actively involved in various professional organizations, including the American Medical Association, the Texas Medical Association, and the Lubbock-Garza-Crosby County Medical Association. He was awarded Super Doc several years in a row among his many recognitions. Bryan always said his best recognition came from happy and satisfied patients who told others about him.
Bryan loved to travel and journeyed the world. He was especially fond of the trips to Israel, Italy, and England. He loved entertaining and being surrounded by family and friends. He had a way of making everyone that knew him feel important and welcomed and had a generous and kind spirit. He was a man of incredibly strong faith who truly acted with a servant’s heart, and always carried himself with grace and positivity.
Bryan is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Lisa Smitherman, his son Bryan Ross Smitherman, and his sister-in-law Annette Patterson. He is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth Carol-Anne Smitherman; his sister Beth Campbell and her husband Jim; nieces Jenny Campbell and Lauren Sharma, her husband Rahul Sharma and their son Jax; nephews Thomas Campbell and Kevin Campbell; his sister-in-law Dena Houchin and her husband Don, sister-in-law Nancy Moore and her husband Jim, nephew Derron Moore and his wife Terri and their children Jacob, Stella and Alex; nephew Derek Moore and his wife Holly and their children Grace and Emily; his aunt Rue Bralley and her husband Joe Bob, and his many beloved cousins and their families and a wealth of friends.
A visitation will be held from 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm., Wednesday, December 11, 2024, at the Venue on Broadway, 2202 Broadway, Lubbock, Tx. A Celebration of Life will be held at 6pm Thursday, December 12, 2024 at First United Methodist Church, 1411 Broadway, Lubbock, Tx.
