Virginia V. Layer of Lubbock passed away on Tuesday, January 28, 2025, at the age of 86. She was born November 8, 1938, in Lamesa to Clarence and Bernice (Clement) Townsend. As a young child, the family moved to Lubbock where she grew up. On October 29, 1965, she married Garland D. Layer. In 1976 Virginia started nursing school and worked as an LVN for 20 years at St. Mary’s Hospital before retiring. Virginia enjoyed reading books, cooking, and entertaining. She will be best remembered for the love she showed to people and how she made them feel welcomed.
Those left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Debbie Jernigan and husband Riley of Lubbock and Melody Alvarado and husband Bobby of Hutto; sister, Patricia Warren; four grandchildren, Mike Riggins, Chris Rogers and wife Megan, Adam Rogers and Heath Alvarado; and four great-grandchildren, Addison, Grayson, Parker and Tyler.
Virginia was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Garland in 2004; and three siblings, Carroll Townsend, Tommy Townsend, and Doris Sterling.
Graveside services will be at 2:30 pm Saturday, February 1, 2025, at Peaceful Gardens Memorial Park.
