Von Alan Curtis died of effects of cancer on November 4, 2024, at his home in Lubbock, Texas. We will miss the presence of our ever-faithful husband, brother, father, father-in-law, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. He desired to do the will of our Father in Heaven to his last day.
He was born on June 2, 1941, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Von R and Barbara Foulger Curtis. He married Carolyn Cutler on August 20, 1964, in the Salt Lake Temple. They lived in Ogden, Tooele, and South Jordan, Utah as well as Robstown and Lubbock, Texas.
He graduated from Weber High school. He served in the Army and as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints; both in California. He returned home to continue his education at Weber State College. Here he nurtured his love of interacting with people as he served in local, state, and national positions of the Student Education Association. He graduated from Weber State College with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a Math Education minor. He graduated from Brigham Young University with a master’s degree in Church History and Doctrine. He taught seminary and institute religion classes in Utah and Texas for the Church Education System for 36+ years.
Alan served and helped wherever he was called and often for many long hours of which he would not complain. After he retired, he delighted in continuing to serve as a teacher at the Texas Tech Institute building in Lubbock on a church mission with Carolyn. They enjoyed the Lubbock area so much they chose to move there and chose to serve as often as possible in the Lubbock Texas Temple. They also served a mission in the Palmyra New York Temple.
Alan's lifelong interest and talent was singing solos, in groups, and in choirs. He could be found singing at church, in long drives to work, while camping, and at home. His trait of hard work helped transform any house they lived in to a home. From adding on, building, finishing a basement, or incredible landscaping & gardening he improved the space and beauty of a Curtis home.
He was preceded in death by his parents Von R Curtis and Barbara Foulger Curtis as well as his grandson, Austin Curtis.
He is survived by his wife Carolyn, his six daughters and four sons: Shauna (and John) Shelton, Brad (and Tammy) Curtis, Scott (and Nina) Curtis, Stacy (and Chris) Karson, Michael Curtis (and Trisha Chavez), Kristen (and Michael) Gutierrez, Amy (and Troy) Sommers, Holly (and Eric) Gardner, Barbara (and Jared) LaMunyon, and Ryan (and Catie) Curtis; 67 grandkids (including spouses) and 24 great grandkids with two more on the way. He is also survived by his siblings: Stuart (and Mary Jean) Curtis, Glen (and Nancy) Curtis, Diane (and Ed) Bridge, Janet (and Richard) White, and Richard (and Denise) Curtis.
Memorial and funeral services are to be held on Thursday, November 7th at 6pm in Lubbock, Texas at 7014 Frankford Ave. under the direction of Combest Family Funeral Homes and Crematory and on Saturday, November 9, at 10 a.m. in South Jordan, Utah at 9455 S 4800 W under the direction of Anderson and Goff Mortuary in Draper, Utah.
