Wayne "Papa" Youngblood

Wayne “Papa” Youngblood, 70, and resident of Lubbock since 1970, was called home by his Lord and Savior on Tuesday evening, January 23, 2024, after a brief illness.  Wayne was born on August 9, 1953, in Hemet, Riverside County, California, to the late William Harvey Youngblood and Melva Dean (Deel) Youngblood.

Wayne attended San Jacinto High School in California before moving to Lubbock, where he graduated from Coronado High School in 1971.   He played in the pony league and little league in school.  Wayne was known as the “Home Run King” as he was known as a power hitter.

Wayne met the love of his life, Debbie Matthews, and they were united in marriage on February 15, 1974, in Lubbock.  Out of this union, they were blessed with a lovely daughter named Hayley, who is Daddy’s Girl.

Wayne worked for Scoggin-Dickey Chevrolet-Buick for the last 43 years, lastly as their Parts Manager.  Wayne was well respected and loved by his colleagues at Scoggin-Dickey and served as a mentor to others in the Parts Department.  His colleagues were considered his “work family” and they bonded as friends for life.

He loved to fish, especially looking forward to his yearly fishing trip with a friend to South Fork, Colorado.  He was a football fan of the Dallas Cowboys and Texas Tech Red Raiders, as well as enjoying baseball and basketball. He was an all around good guy, who loved to talk, laugh, and was always smiling and happy.  He was a true family man who loved his family dearly.  He loved to travel, especially going on cruises.  He was raised by his parents in the Baptist faith.

Those left to honor and cherish Wayne’s memory include his wife, Debbie; his one and only daughter, Hayley Youngblood-Railey and husband Cory of Lubbock.  He also leaves behind two special grandchildren, Emmalyn Jade Railey and Madisyn Mae Railey, who affectionately knew him as Papa.  Wayne was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Ron Youngblood; and three sisters:  Judy Miller, Brenda Davis and Sherri Wagner.

A time of reflection and visitation for Wayne will be held from 5 PM to 8 PM on Tuesday, January 30, 2024, at Combest Family Funeral Home’s Venue on Broadway, at 2202 Broadway, for those who wish to pay their respects.  Cremation arrangements are under the personal care and direction of Combest Family Funeral Homes and Crematory.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorial donations in Wayne's memory to the American Cancer Society, PO Box 6704, Hagerstown, MD 21741 or to the Gliobastoma Foundation, PO Box 62066, Durham, NC 27715.
