William "Leon" Bloom departed from this life on January 2, 2025 to be with Jesus and his one true love.
Leon was born on January 19, 1933, to Bill and Ester Bloom in Round Rock, Texas. He attended school at Stoney Point and Round Rock and graduated from Round Rock High in 1950. His early years were spent working with the family doing farm chores and at the dairy. He talked about milking cows early in the morning and then making deliveries to the town folks before going to school. He was drafted into the U.S. Army and spent 2 years serving his country. During those two years, he was primarily stationed in El Paso, Texas and Lawton, Oklahoma.
He met the love of his life, Shirley Vermae Crawford and married her in 1958. The couple had three children. Leon worked for G. E. and Southwestern Bell until he joined the Federal Aviation Administration in 1959. His job took him several places but most of his working years were spent in Fort Stockton, TX and then to Lubbock where they stayed after retiring. He loved his work as an electronic technician/NavAid and providing for his family, allowing Shirley to stay home and raise their children. He retired in 1988, and he and Shirley were able to travel to many areas of the country. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and kept his membership active even though he didn’t get to attend meetings. He and Shirley were active members of Agape Methodist Church for nearly 40 years. He held various positions and served on several committees through the years.
Leon is preceded in death by his parents and his wife Shirley.
Left to survive him are son, Grant Bloom (Gayla) of Albuquerque N.M., daughter, Gay Smauley of the home and daughter Carolyn Patton of Fort Worth. He has four grandchildren, Jay Bloom (Sara) of Alamogordo, N.M, Curtis Bloom (Kathryn) of Wolfforth, Emily Patton of Fort Worth and Jordan Patton, also of Fort Worth. He also had five great grandkids that he cherished. Also surviving him are his only sibling, Marilyn McMullen of Georgetown, TX and two nephews.
Memorials in Leon's honor can be made to Agape Methodist Church or the South Plains Food Bank.
